Congratulations on being 20 weeks pregnant with Twins, you are now well into your second trimester! It’s an exciting yet overwhelming time, with so much to learn about the Twins fetal development and we are here to help you every step of the way.
From now on, to give you a better idea of your twins’ growth, the average length measurements will be from head to foot (crown to heel), rather than head to bottom (crown to rump). Each twin currently measures about 26cm (10.2in), though it’s still common for one twin to be bigger than the other.
By 20 weeks, your twins’ eyebrows have started to grow, and they’re sprouting hair on top of their heads. This hair may change in texture and colour once they’re born.
There’s also a lot going on inside your babies’ heads. The areas of the brain responsible for taste, smell, hearing, sight and touch are now developing. When your babies are born, their sense of smell will be one of their most developed senses, making it easy for them to recognise you straight away.
A white, creamy substance called vernix caseosa will begin to cover your twins. This protects their skin from the surrounding amniotic fluid and acts as a barrier against infection after birth.
Most mothers-to-be can feel their twins first movements (quickening) between 18 weeks and 20 weeks of pregnancy. If you’ve been pregnant before, you may already recognise the little twinges. If it’s your first pregnancy, what you think is a rumbling stomach could turn out to be your twins doing little backflips!
The movements you feel should be pretty consistent for the next 10 weeks, or until your twins get too big to wriggle around as much. Until then, you may find that your twins sometimes move around so much that they wake you up during the night.
